Captain's Blog 21.09.20
I hope everyone is keeping safe and well! There has been a lot in the news about Covid-19 in the last few days but as for playing golf, I think for the moment we are continuing as existing. Let’s “Play safe, Stay Safe” follow the procedures that we adopted :-
Distance – 2metres
Wash / sanitise
Masks in Pro-shop
Arrive at Pro-shop no more than 10 mins before tee time.
Please refresh yourselves on the “Stay safe” guidance.
There will be a difference in the Clubhouse and any new rules / regulations will be circulated shortly.
We have managed to continue with competitions, and we have had some team matches. The Lunesdale League guys were at Heysham on Saturday, finishing 4th.
The Autumn Golf festival was good with many out on the course on Friday and Saturday. The Ladies Open was brilliant and we had SGC winners, with Sandy Armistead, Lynn Penswick and Margaret Roberts taking top spot. Well done and many congratulations.
Seniors played away at Casterton, an honourable draw was the result. An away day at Sedbergh was very enjoyable, the Course in good condition and fantastic views. Winners were the team of Dave Mee, Mike Roberts and Keith Burrow. Thanks to Mike McDermott for organising.
The Seniors trip to North Wales was also a great success, playing at Abergele, North Wales GC and Northrop on the way back. North Wales GC was a links course with a slight breeze on the day !! I would not like to play it if that slight breeze increased to a blow or a gale !!!! Congratulations to Steve Porter who won the George Cumberlidge Cup held on our last day at Northrop. Well done Roger for organising the event. There was £193 raised for Captains charities and then a bonus of £88 raised by Keith Porter, doing a “barrow boy” routine, selling golf balls, very funny a great act performance Keith !
The gents had the Morley Saunders Bogey competition on Sunday. You wouldn’t think it would be so hard to take on the Course but as there were only 10 who beat it, 5 who halved and the rest were beaten, so we can safely say the Course won. Well done Ken Davidson, who won, finishing 5 up !!
I’m sure I wasn’t the only one watching the US Open ! Bryson DeChambeau winning by 6 shots. His average drive was 325 yards, he hit a 375 yard drive on the 9th ! to set up an Eagle. He works out his putts on the green with mathematic and scientific calculations !! What happened to a putting rhythm, feel, an eye for the line or a hot streak ? No, Bryson says putting is a process ! (and he takes a mighty long time to do it !)
The Greenkeepers have been working hard on the course and specifically on the greens with help from volunteers. Parts of the course closed in turn. This work was essential for the greens to have time to recover before the cold weather kicks in. Thanks to Mark, Tom and Graham and to the volunteers, for their sterling work. Lots of good feedback received from visitors, so well done all.
The photo above shows our newly improved Commemorative Garden. A big thanks to all the volunteers who carried out the work and to Ricky Nelson for supplying the chips.
I hope everyone stays safe, well and we are all able to enjoy our golf.
Cheers,
Steve
